How to Live by Sarah Bakewell is a wonderful account of the life of Montaigne. I read it in just over a few days, finding it hard to put the book down. I learned a great deal about Montaigne, whose name, before reading this biography, was only a passing reference I’d come across in Bertrand Russell’s History of Western Philosophy.

Sarah Bakewell’s new book dwells on existentialism and its afterlives Michael Wood Sarah Bakewell’s previous book, published six years ago, told the story of two lives: the one Michel de Montaigne lived in sixteenth-century France, and the one that became “the long party” attended by everyone who read him over the years after his death.
Sarah Bakewell had a wandering childhood in Europe, Australia and England. After studying at the University of Essex, she was a curator of early printed books at the Wellcome Library before becoming a full-time writer, publishing her highly acclaimed biographies The Smart and The English Dane. This book could be seen as a complement to Sarah Bakewell’s seminal “At the Existentialist Café: Freedom, Being, and Apricot Cocktails”, where Poiriér has collected a lot of background and information on what some truly exciting persons thought of, did, and how they performed both during and after the Second World War.
